A 42mm U channel handrail sits on the top edge of a glass balustrade and gives people something to hold. It also ties the panels together, so a single broken panel does not leave a gap in the guard. Many buyers search for this part by its size, yet the name covers two different profiles. At UNIKIM we make both in our Ningbo factory, so this guide explains which one fits your glass and your code.

What a 42mm U channel handrail is
A 42mm U channel handrail is a stainless steel rail with a slot or U-shaped channel underneath. The channel slides over the top edge of the glass, and a rubber strip holds the glass tight. As a result, the rail and the glass act as one line from end to end.
The “42mm” usually refers to a round tube of Ø42.4 mm, which is a standard tube size. However, some buyers use the same words for a flat U cap rail. Both do the same job on top of the glass, but they look and feel different.
Do not confuse it with the U-channel at the bottom of a frameless railing. That bottom profile is a base shoe, and it holds the glass from below. Our article on aluminum base shoe vs U channel covers that part.
Round slot tube or flat U cap rail?
There are two common profiles, and the choice changes the look and the grip.
The round slot tube is a round tube with a slot cut along its length. Our round slot tube handrail MOD 0300 comes in Ø42.4, 48.3 and 60.3 mm with a 1.5 mm wall. The slot is 24, 27 or 34 mm wide, depending on the tube.
The U cap rail is a flatter U-shaped profile. It sits lower on the glass and gives a slim, modern edge. For example, our U cap rail MOD 0301 comes in 30 × 27 mm and 40 × 37 mm.
In practice, the round tube works as a real handrail, because the hand wraps around it. The U cap rail works best as a protective cap on glass that does not need a graspable handrail.
| Profile | Size | Slot / U width | Glass range | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round slot tube MOD 0300 | Ø42.4 × 1.5 mm | 24 mm | With matching rubber | Stairs, balconies, graspable rail |
| Round slot tube MOD 0300 | Ø48.3 × 1.5 mm | 27 mm | With matching rubber | Commercial stairs |
| Round slot tube MOD 0300 | Ø60.3 × 1.5 mm | 34 mm | With matching rubber | Thick laminated glass, cap only |
| U cap rail MOD 0301 | 30 × 27 mm | U 24 | 8–21.52 mm | Slim cap on balconies |
| U cap rail MOD 0301 | 40 × 37 mm | U 34 | 8–31.52 mm | Thick glass, cap only |
Is a 42mm U channel handrail graspable under the code?
For stairs and ramps, the handrail must be easy to grip. Under IBC Section 1014 on handrails, a round handrail needs an outside diameter of 1¼ to 2 inches (32 to 51 mm). So a Ø42.4 mm tube fits well inside that range, and so does Ø48.3 mm.
However, a Ø60.3 mm tube is larger than 51 mm. It can still cap the glass, but it will not count as a Type I round handrail. In that case, the project may need a separate handrail on brackets.
Height matters too. The same section of the IBC sets handrail height at 34 to 38 inches (864 to 965 mm) above the stair nosings. Because a cap rail sits on the glass, the glass height must be cut so the rail ends up in that range.
Why a top rail matters for glass guards
A top rail is not only a handle. It also keeps the guard in place if one panel breaks. That is why the code links glass guards and top rails closely.
IBC Section 2407 on glass in handrails and guards says guards with structural glass balusters must have an attached top rail or handrail. The rail must be supported by at least three glass balusters, or stay in place if one fails. The exception is laminated glass with two or more equal plies, tested to ASTM E2353.
In practice, a continuous 42mm U channel handrail is one of the simplest ways to meet that rule. The rail runs over several panels, so it bridges any single broken panel.
Glass thickness and rubber strips
The rubber strip decides the fit, so the glass thickness must be fixed first. Each strip is made for one slot width and a range of glass thicknesses.
Our slot tube rubber strip comes as MOD 0842 for the 24 mm slot, MOD 0848 for the 27 mm slot and MOD 0860 for the 34 mm slot. Across the range, the strips cover glass from 8 to 31.52 mm, chosen by article number. Each strip is 2,500 mm long.
Because many codes ask for laminated glass in guards, common choices are 12.76, 13.52, 16.76 and 17.52 mm. For thick laminated glass, check that the slot width and strip match before you order the 42mm U channel handrail.
Fittings for a complete 42mm U channel handrail
A rail is only as good as its fittings. Corners, ends and wall connections all need parts that match the tube size.
A typical slot tube system uses these fittings: an end cap to close the tube, a wall flange to fix the end to a wall, a straight connector between lengths, a horizontal 90° corner and a vertical 90° elbow. On stairs, adjustable joints set the angle where the rail turns up or down. For example, our slot tube end cap MOD 1100 fits all three tube sizes.
You can see the full set of parts on our slot tube and handrail category page. Each fitting is made for Ø42.4, 48.3 and 60.3 mm tube with a 1.5 mm wall.
In addition, our guide to the slot tube system for glass railings explains how the parts fit together.

Materials, finishes and outdoor use
Most slot tube rails are stainless steel, because the rail is touched every day. Grade 304 suits dry indoor areas, while 316 resists chlorides near pools and the sea. For coastal sites, 316 is the safer choice.
Finish also matters. Brushed stainless hides fingerprints and small scratches well. By contrast, polished steel looks bright but shows marks faster. For a darker look, our U cap rail also comes in matte black.
Aluminum slot tube is a lower-cost option. However, it is softer, so it marks more easily on a busy stair.
Installation points that save time on site
A 42mm U channel handrail is simple to fit, yet a few details save hours. First, cut the tube square and deburr the slot, so the rubber is not damaged. Second, fit the rubber strip on the glass before you press the tube down. Third, glue or screw the fittings as the system drawing shows.
Plan the joints early. Straight connectors should sit over a panel, not over a gap between panels. In addition, leave the wall flange and end cap positions clear of door swings and stair landings.
Finally, keep the glass top edge level. A 42mm U channel handrail shows every step in the glass line, so a small error at the base appears at the top.
Worked example: a 42mm U channel handrail on a balcony
Here is a simple job, so you can follow the count. The balcony is L-shaped, with runs of 4.0 m and 2.5 m and one outside corner. One end meets a wall, while the other end is open. The glass is 12.76 mm laminated, and the site is close to a pool.
First, we pick the rail. A Ø42.4 mm round slot tube gives a graspable 42mm U channel handrail, and the 24 mm slot suits this glass with the matching strip. Next, we choose 316 stainless steel because of the pool chlorides.
Then we count the parts. The two runs need tube lengths plus one straight connector where a length ends mid-run. The corner takes one horizontal 90° fitting, the wall end takes one wall flange, and the open end takes one end cap. Finally, we add rubber strip for the full 6.5 m of glass edge, plus a spare length.
That short list is all a factory needs to quote the rail. As a result, the quote arrives faster and nothing is missing on site.
Common mistakes with a 42mm U channel handrail
Most site problems come from a few repeated errors. The first is ordering the tube before the glass thickness is fixed, because the rubber strip then does not fit. The second is using a Ø60.3 mm tube as the only handrail on a stair, although it is larger than the graspable range.
Another common mistake is leaving joints over the gaps between panels. A connector there has nothing under it, so the rail can flex. Similarly, installers sometimes forget the wall flange, and the rail end then hangs free.
Finally, many jobs mix grades. A 304 rail with 316 fittings near the sea will stain at the 304 parts first. So keep the whole 42mm U channel handrail in one grade.
Cost: what changes the price
The price depends on the tube size, the grade, the finish and the number of fittings. A Ø42.4 mm tube in 304 costs less than a Ø60.3 mm tube in 316. Similarly, a stair with many turns needs more joints and corners than a straight balcony.
When you ask for a quote, send the run lengths, corners, wall ends, glass thickness and site location. With that, a supplier can count tube lengths, fittings and rubber in one pass.
Why buy the rail from a manufacturer
A manufacturer can match the tube, slot width, rubber and fittings, because it makes them as one system. UNIKIM has over 20 years of manufacturing experience in Ningbo. We supply the 42mm U channel handrail and its fittings in 304 and 316 stainless steel, with OEM and wholesale packing.
Mixed orders are common. For example, slot tube, fittings, rubber, spigots and clamps can ship in one container. You can also see the range on our store on Made-in-China.
FAQ
Most suppliers mean a round slot tube with an outside diameter of 42.4 mm and a wall of about 1.5 mm. At UNIKIM the slot in the Ø42.4 mm tube is 24 mm wide. The same rail family also comes in Ø48.3 and Ø60.3 mm for thicker glass, and a flat U cap rail is available in 30 × 27 mm and 40 × 37 mm.
The rubber strip sets the glass range, not the tube alone. With the matching strip, the 24 mm slot of a 42mm U channel handrail suits common laminated glass for balustrades. Across the full UNIKIM range, the strips cover glass from 8 to 31.52 mm, so check the article number against your exact glass.
Under IBC Section 1014.3.1, a round handrail must be 32 to 51 mm in outside diameter, so a 42.4 mm tube fits. Handrail height must also be 34 to 38 inches above the nosings. Local codes can differ, so confirm the 42mm U channel handrail layout with your building official or engineer.
Often, yes. IBC Section 2407.1.2 requires an attached top rail or handrail on guards with structural glass balusters, unless the glass is laminated with two or more equal plies and tested to ASTM E2353. A continuous 42mm U channel handrail is a simple way to meet that rule.
No. The cap rail sits on top of the glass and serves as a handrail or edge protection. A base shoe is a heavy aluminum channel at the bottom that holds the glass in place. Many railings use both, with a base shoe below and a 42mm U channel handrail on top.
Summary
A 42mm U channel handrail caps the glass, bridges the panels and gives a graspable rail when it is a round Ø42.4 mm tube. Choose the profile first, then fix the glass thickness, the rubber strip and the fittings. Check handrail size and height against IBC Section 1014, and use a continuous top rail where IBC Section 2407 asks for one.
